Brief Summary

The Sacred Root Tribal Information Fellowship provides representatives from American Indian tribes, Native Alaskan villages, and the Native Hawaiian community with an opportunity to learn about the National Library of Medicine, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and to use that knowledge to improve access to health information and technology for their communities. Two fellows with complimentary background in health and information technology come from the participating tribe. The program includes training in the use of NLM information resources, instruction in managing information outreach projects, information about potential funding opportunities, and most importantly, connection with people and programs that might provide support and assistance in the future. After the training is completed at NLM, the fellows continue their professional duties with their respective tribes or organizations, and also have an opportunity to visit their Regional Medical Library, attend conferences, meetings, and training programs throughout the country. By the end of the year, the two fellows, in collaboration with NLM, develop an information-related project for their tribe or community which is funded by NLM.
