Groups
- Participants in the 2006 Native American Health Information Services conference in Albuquerque. This is the group that suggested development of the wiki, and they are subscribers to the NativeHI email list. On July 18, 2008 they received, via the list, the announcement about the wiki’s availability. Each has also received the invitation to participate in the wiki, sent directly to their individual email addresses on August 6, 2008. Additional contacts have been made with group members to encourage them to contribute information about their activities to the wiki.
- Indian Health Service administrators, tribal leaders, health directors. Sohail Khan can forward the invitation to participate to some of his IHS colleagues. He shared the publicity flyer with two IHS administrators who could help publicize the wiki at the August, 2008 Native Health Research Conference. As the wiki grows and has more content, these administrators are good potential channels to IHS email lists of tribal leaders and health directors.
- Outreach Connections Native Health Information Steering Committee. Copies of the bookmark and flyer have been made available to Steering Committee members who will be attending relevant meetings this summer and thereafter. The poster will also be provided to them.
- Papa Ola Lokahi - http://www.papaolalokahi.org/ - http://www.papaolalokahi.org/coconut/events/ (list of events) - Papa Ola Lōkahi is a clearinghouse for data and timely information associated with the health status of Native Hawaiians. They collect, compile and freely share these resources with Hawaiians, their families and those who serve them. “To improve the health status and wellbeing of Native Hawaiians and others by advocating for, initiating and maintaining culturally appropriate strategic actions aimed at improving the physical, mental and spiritual health of Native Hawaiians and their 'ohana (families) and empowering them to determine their own destinies."
- Staff of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine regional offices (aka Regional Medical Libraries. RML staff need to be aware of the site and of the bookmark and flyer so that they can inform network members who are working with native populations. An all-RML teleconference about the Outreach Connections site was held in December 2008.
- Native American Libraries Special Interest Group, a roundtable of the New Mexico Library Association. (http://nmla.org/about_nmla/SIGs.html) Barbara Nail-Chiwetalu is a member and Pat Bradley, Steering Committee member, is also a member.
- Sacred Root participants. This is a fellowship program from NLM's Specialized Information Services. In 2009 there are two participants, Meghan Jernigan and Jenny Lee, both from the Urban Indian Health Institute in Seattle. RML staff from the Pacific Northwest Region will be contacting them about regional services and funding opportunities; Gale Dutcher prefers that we hold off contacting them about Outreach Connections until some later date.
- The American Indian Library Association, an affiliate of the American Library Association, is a membership action group that addresses the library-related needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives.
- Honoring Generations, an IMLS supported scholarship, supports American Indian students interested in careers in tribal librarianship. Scholarships have been available for six students to enroll in a 40 graduate credit hour in-residence program at the University of Texas at Austin in the School of Information. Per the Honoring Generations website an additional grant request has been submitted, but it is unknown at this time if funding will be received to continue the program.
- Knowledge River is a Tucson-based educational experience within the School of information Resources and Library Science (SIRLS) at the University of Airzona that focuses on educating Hispanic and Native American library and information professionals. Knowledge River also fosters understanding of library information issues from the perspectives of Hispanic and Native Americans and advocates for culturally sensitive library and information services to these communities.
- Community Health Representatives address health care needs through the provision of community-oriented primary care services, including traditional Native concepts in multiple’ settings, utilizing community-based, well-trained, medically-guided health care workers. Tribally-contracted program through the Indian Health Services. Carrie Ness, Assistant Director for Native People for Cancer Control suggested to George Gottschalk that CHRs are a good link to native health literacy and education.
2009 Events
- DONE --Indian Health Summit, Denver CO July 7-9, 2009 conferences.thehillgroup.com/healthsummit/index.html Dana Abbey (NN/LM MCR) is exhibiting. The OC poster has been accepted for Dana Abbey to present. Dana spoke with 51 visitors to the poster. The majority of the visitors thought the wiki was a great idea, not only for them to highlight their projects, but to also see what others are doing around the country. Dana demoed the wiki to 12 attendees!
- DONE --Association of American Indian Physicians meeting in Alexandria VA July 22-26, 2009—Sohail will check with his medical director to see whether he plans to attend this meeting. Note: this was in July in 2008. Angela has confirmed that SIS does not plan to exhibit at this meeting.
- Powwows—those that are staffed by NLM are included on the National Library of Medicine Exhibit Schedule.
- National Indian Health Board Consumer Conference, September 14-18, 2009 location Washington DC area(check back at http://www.nihb.org/ for 2009 details as they become available). Angela has checked with SIS, and Gale reports that they are investigating exhibit possibilities.
- DONE --MCMLA Annual Meeting, Breckenridge CO, September 21-24, 2009. Claire has submitted an abstract for the poster at this MLA chapter meeting. The poster was rejected.
- PNC/MLA Annual Meeting, Seattle WA, October 17-20, 2009. Susan has submitted an abstract for the poster at this MLA chapter meeting.
- 66h Annual Convention of the National Congress of American Indians

Patricia Bradley will attend and take 50 bookmarks for distribution at the Center for Native American Health, UNM table.
- DONE --National Conference of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums in Portland, OR, organized by the American Indian Library Association. (October 18-22, 2009) At this time there are no plans for NLM to staff this event.
- Thursday, July 9, 2009. George G. speaking with Susan Hanks, President of American Indian Library Association, mentioned working on the wiki for the ARL Fellowship at UW. Hanks mentioned the possibility of AILA's interest in the wiki or at least the possibility of adding a link on the AILA website and/or announcing it on the AILA listserv.
- CHR Conference website - only upcoming conference listed is Oklahoma Area Association of CHRs 23rd Annual Training & Education Conference, Sep 14-18, 2009 in Catoosa OK.
- DONE --SCC/MLA Annual Conference, Tulsa, OK, October 17-21, 2009 - "Outreach Connections Native Health Information Wiki" was accepted as a poster session with Barbara Nail-Chiwetalu presenting and disseminating bookmarks. 32 bookmarks were distributed
